Rider Development Pathway

PONY RACING AUTHORITY – RIDER DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY

Pony Racing is a recognised grassroots entry to horseracing for all areas of employment in horseracing, including those looking to become future professional jockeys,  working in yards or other areas within the sport.

In 2026, The Pony Racing Authority (PRA) is working in collaboration with The British Racing School, The National Trainers Federation and The Scottish Racing Academy. We are pleased to see Advanced Training Days, for PRA Members keen to become a jockey, and jockey coaching on the PRA Racecourse Series align with The Rider Development Pathway (RDP) as spearheaded by The Horseracing Industry People Board. The Rider Development Pathway, launched in January 2026, is the sports first rider or athlete pathway which brings together under one ‘umbrella’ all of the entry and progression routes for those riding thoroughbreds to develop their skills - towards either a work rider and/or a jockey role in our sport.

The PRA is delighted that Pony Racing is recognised as one of the key entry routes for the RDP. The PRA’s contribution to the RDP remains focussed on enjoyment and engagement, whilst giving young people the opportunity to enter the Rider Development Pathway with an established grassroots skill set. The Pony Racing Authority is committed to supporting industry goals and objectives and is thrilled to be involved with the Rider Development Pathway.
